Another really nice feature of Yahoo! Personals is the "icebreaker", which allows you to show interest in a potential match without actually spending any money. Of course, you'll have to fork up the dough to actually trade emails or use the instant messenger to really get to know that match, but by that time it's obviously worth it!

In fact, a six-month subscription is only $15.99 per month, which is quite cheap considering Yahoo! Personal's humongous membership base and great reputation. It's a great tool for both those on their first tour of duty or fresh to the online dating world entirely.
