Tips and Tricks to Help You Plan Your Trip TO Mexico Safe and Sound

At your destination: Shuttle to the resort – checking in and enjoying your time

Whether the flight was two hours or eight nothing feels quite as good as that first blast of Mexican heat and humidity. Stepping off the plane we followed the crowd until customs, at this point we handed in our Mexican travel visa forms (they get you to fill these out on the plane). Ensure that you keep the slip they give you from the bottom of this form as it is needed to leave the country at the end of your vacation. After this we passed through a gate that operated on a red light green light system and we were good to go.

Sunquest and other popular vacation companies will generally prearrange your shuttle to the resort so bypass the taxi drivers and time share salesmen to a salesrep holding the sign of the company you booked with (Sunwing, Nolitour, Transat Holidays etc). If you have any doubts about your shuttle to your hotel give your travel company a call before you leave on your trip to double check. In Cancun Airport these agents weren't allowed to be inside the terminal but could be found right outside the main exit.

After arriving at the resort, present them with your hotel voucher and get settled into your room. Tour the grounds, go for a swim, sip a couple of margaritas and have fun.

Activities and Tours

Tours
There is no shortage of things to do outside of the resort in the Mayan Riviera. From Visiting Mayan Ruins to zip lining, cenote swimming, catamaran rides and swimming with the dolphins this place is designed to cater to tourists. I strongly suggest you spend a little extra money and treat yourself to a least one of these great outings. Booking a tour online ahead of time will probably end up saving you some money.

We ended up taking a tour with AllturnNative Tours to the Coba Mayan Ruins. Our tour guide was William and he did an excellent job. The service was professional, informative and packed full of fun and exciting activities.

Other notable attractions in the area are

Xcaret Eco Park
We visited Xcaret for a day and were totally blown away. Beautiful flora and fauna set amongst Mayan Ruins and natural waterways.

Xel Ha
A natural open sea aquarium in which you can swim with the fishes and take a sea trek using a hi-tech diving helmet that requires no swimming skill whatsoever.

Playa Del Carmen
A nice safe city to visit on a day trip is Playa Del Carmen. The city runs along a white sand beach with some of the nicest swimming I've encountered. Walking down 5th street one will see a variety of shops selling all kinds of wares, restaurants, disco tech and pubs. The Mexican salesmen down here are after your money and expect to do a little bargaining if you want to get a good deal. Don't be intimidated by their pushy style of sales, know the value of what your buying and always push for a better deal. The Coco Bongo in Playa Del Carmen is supposed to be quite an evening to remember and was recommended to us by a number of people.
